当分野の歴史
生医研生化学部門は昭和57年4月の研究所の改組前は九州大学医学部付属癌研究施設化学部門(昭和32年〜昭和57年)であり、改組に伴い生体防御医学研究所の生化学部門として発足した。その間生医研の初代所長である遠藤英也教授のもとで、発癌の機構を主として発癌物質の作用機構や癌化に伴う遺伝子発現の異常の問題を中心に研究が行われた。平成元年3月に遠藤教授が停年退官され、平成2年1月に関口睦夫教授が就任した。関口教授のもとでは、細胞癌化の問題を遺伝子の突然変異のレベルへ掘り下げて研究が行われた。そして平成9年8月より第3代教授として中別府雄作教授が着任した。
平成13年4月1日付けの研究所改組にともない、生化学部門は廃止され、新たに個体機能制御学部門・脳機能制御学分野として再編された。現在、活性酸素によるゲノム傷害とその防御機構という観点から「がん」から「神経変性死」に着目して研究を進めている。
