Exposure to environmental factors, such as Helicobacter pylori infection and smoking, leads to cancer development. We have demonstrated that such exposures induce epigenomic alterations in normal-appearing tissues, and that their accumulation levels correlate with cancer risk. Specific types of inflammation are critical for induction of aberrant DNA methylation, and specific genes are methylated in response to specific environmental factors. Clarification of the induction mechanisms is expected to lead to novel strategies of cancer prevention, and measurement of the accumulated epigenomic alterations can be used as a risk marker that reflects our life.
